An incredibly moving message from a Yale senior who died shortly after writing this, and graduating college.
Month: May 2012
Though last night’s meet was filled with ups and downs (much like every meet we go to) there were a few guys who truly took to heart the lessons we have tried to teach about taking advantage of opportunities presented and competing with passion and determination. The absolute embodiment of that last night?
MENDO!!!
He scratched and fought and clawed his way to WINNING the 3200m last night at BMOC. In a new PB of 9:38. Under menacing skies. Responding to each and every move his competitors made. With a furious kick, followed by a strong final surge when his competitor closed in on him with about 60 yards or so to go. Nick ran the race we hope and pray each of our athletes will compete every time they step on the track. A kid who gives his all to everything he does finally got what he deserves!
In the history of BMOC (over 30 years) The Ironmen have done pretty well for themselves…but one thing no Ironman had ever done before last night was win the 3200m! We’ve won every other event…
100m – 4x
200m – 3x
400m – Once
800m – 5x
1600m – 2x
110HH – 5x
400H – 4x
Shot – Once
Discus – Once
Javelin – 3x
TJ – 2x
LJ – 3x
HJ – 4x
PV – Once
4×400 – 6x
In a world filled with mediocrity, the BMOC sweep is just another ridiculously awesome thing that we’ve accomplished to add to our legacy as one of the all-time great T&F programs in Bergen County. We had 8 guys in the field of 18 runners last night…some ran credibly but only one told me he thought he could win…and did. Thanks to Mendo for making our ridiculous awesomeness even more ridiculously awesome.
Other personal best performances:
Chris D’Amico (Shot – 50’1″)
Joshua Floyd (110HH – 15.48)
Dalton Friend (100m -11.39)
Anthony Orosz (800m – 2:01.97)
Michael Higgins (3200m – 9:47.54)
Michael Flanagan (3200m – 9:51.87)
Tim Hamlett (4×400 – 48.2 split)
Hang on, men…it’s been a long ride and a tough challenge but there’s only one more week! GO FOR IT!!!

FULL BMOC RESULTS HERE:
Just a little background/history on what we’ve done at BMOC (and why) during my 10 years here at the Prep…
BMOC serves a tremendous purpose, not only for our program but for the individuals involved as well…it allows for some of you to compete one more time, either before the end of the season, or perhaps the end of your career(s). For some, this is your first shot at “the big time” and for others it is another race in your discipline to put on your resume. Some will achieve PBs and struggle to make the finals; others will earn medals or perhaps score an upset. Some will stamp themselves as “the next great Bosco athlete” while others may leave a legacy that this program will remember forever. The best-of-the-best in DBP history have all competed at BMOC, and the rest have prayed for their opportunity and seized it when it came.
What will YOU do with the chance you’ve been given? Will you go out with a bang, or a whimper? In my opinion (and Neil Young’s) it’s better to burn out than it is to fade away – go out either on top, or trying to be! Do well at BMOC and you’ll be a B.M.O.C. (Big Man on Campus) and add to the @DBPXCTF legacy!

Hey all – just a quick PSA before we head out for State Sectionals…
My teammates at the Garden State Track Club are sponsoring a new race on Sunday June 10th on the campus of Rutgers university in New Brunswick – check your email for more info and/or the event website, http://www.gardenstatetc.org/college/mile.html
So here’s how it all went down at tonight’s BMOC seeding meeting…let me set the scene…
Ramsey HS cafeteria…the entire Bergen County coaching fraternity is assembled, looking over the best performance of the season…18 athletes per event make it to BMOC each year and when people got to the 3200 list, that’s what they saw!
So here’s what we were able to get…some of you, unfortunately, just didn’t make it in this year…I did what I could (and absorbed the scornful looks of many) and here’s who will compete at BMOC on Tuesday…
100m – Dalton Friend (Comeback of the Year!!!)
400m – Noah Lartigue
800m – Anthony Orosz and Schan Lartigue
1600m – Nick Carapezza and Adam Ramos
3200m – Nick Mendolia, Mike Flanagan, Nick Lapinski, Jack Costello, Reuben Townsend, Mike Higgins, Bobby Gonzalez & Brian Taylor
110HH – Joshua Floyd
Shot – Chris D’Amico
Javelin – Andrew Boman
Triple Jump – Joe Moran
4x400m – Mitch, Ryan, Noah, Tim
LET’S GO!!! We can’t waste all these spots, dudes!!!
Last night’s end of the year banquet was one of the most enjoyable, personal and memorable ones we’ve had in my time at the Prep. It never ceases to amaze me how much we’ve grown together as a team and that amidst our most challenging year as a team, we’ve grown closer and stronger as a family…which is what this is really all about, when you think about it.
Tonight’s dinner came at a crossroads for the program. Actually, it is kind of like the “5 Corners” intersection in Westwood – it’s kind of confusing when you get there but if you slow down and think about where you are and where you are trying to get, even if you make a wrong turn somehow you’ll get where you need to go. That’s where we all are right now – and that’s where I was until this morning. Life is filled with challenges…we all know this, and it seems cliche…BUT the challenges we face, endure and overcome are what make us the MEN we want to be.
Behind every face on this team there is a story and we heard some of those stories today; there are countless others that go untold, or that come out on long bus rides, or that are told while we sit around all weekend at a track meet. Some of my greatest and most personal memories come from track & field…from my high school days, winning a state sectional title as a freshman and then waiting 3 years to win another gold medal…to my ups and downs with collegiate running…to my 1st “rededication” to running in 2000 when I somehow willed myself to the fastest times of my life…to my 1st coaching job (at Old Tappan)…to meeting my wife at a track clinic…to being given the job at DBP by Nepo…to getting engaged on the infield at Old Tappan during County Groups in 2006…to our first state title in 2006…to our first National title in 2007…to our 2nd National title in 2007…to sitting at the Waffle House in Greensboro, NC at midnight with Jay, Sharif, Marvin, Cato and Coach Gibbs as NATIONAL CHAMPIONS…taking my wedding photos with my wife on the DBP track…to the team’s rally around Matt Cato and somehow pulling off the improbable win at County Relays after he broke his leg…to winning 3 straight STATE TITLES from 2009-2011…
This program, its’ coaches and the athletes and families I’ve worked with for the past 10 years (1000s of them) mean everything to me and I am thankful to be a part of this thing we’ve created here. I’m not ready to give that up just yet.
Now it gets interesting…I start playing the “what if” game…the gap narrows a bit if a few things change here and there…it is down to a 10 point lead for Old Tappan…I found a few little places we can change things – where do YOU see yourself moving up here or there? Think about it…across 16 events if we find ONE MORE POINT in HALF of the events, we can win this thing!!!

I bring you the 1st edition of my predictions for this weekend’s meet. Between now and Friday, I’d like to know your thoughts – especially on where we can make up the points so we can win this thing. I know we can score more than 70 points; the question(s) is/are who is going to do that, how and where?

These lyrics say it all…don’t let time pass you by! Seize every moment, especially those when you’re racing against the clock!
Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way.
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way.
Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain.
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today.
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you.
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.
So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it’s sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but you’re older,
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.
Every year is getting shorter never seem to find the time.
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over,
Thought I’d something more to say.
