#RIPAC

The world is a sadder place this week, as we now go through life without a friend, coach, runner, triathlete, and overall good person who was taken from us far too soon. Our friend Andrew Capizzi died tragically on Sunday, hit by a car while biking in South Jersey…and though we know what happened, we still don’t know how or why…for those who knew him well, this is a devastating tragedy, but for those who didn’t know him as well, the sadness is no less nor is the feeling any less melancholy…the stories, posts, lyrics, quotes and memories I’ve seen online come from all over the place and from people who knew how good of a person Andrew was.

Andrew was a good friend to those who knew him and those who knew him loved him. I’ve never heard anyone say a bad word about Andrew and I never heard Andrew say a bad word about anyone. I first “met” Andrew when he ran for Paramus HS – and competed against my Bosco boys, and again a few years later when we crossed paths at a road race in Ridgewood. Then, some more time passed and he joined the GSTC, quickly endearing himself to everyone he met in the club and becoming one of our most valued and valuable club members. We ran together, we travelled to Kentucky together (he had the smallest bladder I’ve ever heard of), we talked about nerdy things like Star Wars and video games, we commiserated about coaching “challenges” and congratulated each other when our athletes triumphed…I watched Andrew sit with his fellow GSTCers last Friday and Saturday, laughing and enjoying the meet, the stories, the fun of being at a track meet with good friends and like-minded people who shared a bond over one of the purest sports out there…running.

What I take away from this is that once again God’s plan, mysterious as it might be, has challenged us to understand it but we know He always has a purpose. I’m not sure what it is, but if we were meant to understand it, there’d be no point to calling it “the Great Unknown” – whatever He has in store for us, wherever he leads us (or takes us) I know where Andrew is – he’s where he deserves to be…guided by the angels, like the Angels he guided for so many seasons, on the track and on the course, in school and in life.

The world was a better place with you in it, kid. The world is a better place because of the lives you touched and the people you connected with. The world will go on, for sure, but not in the same way and it shouldn’t – we all need to remember you for what you made us; and that’s why I know you’re in Heaven….because you were such a good person that you made us all better people as well…
